Historic Tours
Panama la Vieja (Old Panama)
Old Panama was the Spanish city founded on the Pacific coast of the Americas on August 15th, 1519.
This city used to be the starting point of the campains that conquered the Inca Empire in Peru. It became Spain's most important gateway for all of the wealth, in silver and gold, coming from the southern continent. The city was sacked by the pirate Henry Morgan in 1671, and although most of it was destroyed, what was the tallest building in the Americas for over 200 years, still stands today.
Casco Viejo (Old Quarters)
The Old Quarters was the second city to be built in 1673 after the pirate Henry Morgan destroyed the first (Old Panama).
This second city was fortified with huge stone walls and seven bastions to protect it from any further
attacks by pirates. This area contains beautiful buildings of 17th century French, Italian and Spanish architectural design,
as well as mounements, plazas, museums, cathedrals including the famous San Jose Cathedral with its gold plated
altar, the National Theater, and the Presidential Palace. Casco Viejo is the perfect place to enjoy the Panamanian nightlife
as you can check out the numerous up-scale cafe's, resteraunts, and bars while at the same time enjoying the 17th century scenery.
Portobelo
Portobelo was officially founded on March 20th, 1597 by Francisco de Valverde y Mercado. Portobelo
was selected as the perfect spot to set up a port for the trade routes between Peru and Spain due
to its topogrophy and harbor conditions. An estimated more than 60% of the wealth from South America
going to Europe passed through this port. Due to the great quantities of wealth in gold and silver that
would pass through this port, it was fortified heavily to stand against attacks by Pirates. This heavy
fortification has left us with some of the most beautiful and interesting ruins in Central America.
Ft. San Lorenzo
Erected around the year 1575, fort San Lorenzo defended the great wealth shipped from Old Panama
up through the Chagres river. The construction of this fort was issued by King Philip II of Spain who ruled
from 1566 to 1598. So rapidly had the traffic in gold, pearls, and slaves developed that Philip II decided
upon the establishment of forts for the protection of this traffic. For nearly a century Fort San Lorenzo
held a position of strategic importance regarding one of Spain's richest highways of commerce and was
established as one of the main trans-shipping points between the old and the new world. Second only to
Portobelo it became the objective of pirates and buccaneers, and would ultimately become the focus
of Sir Henry Morgan in his plans for the conquest of Panama. The strategic location of fort San Lorenzo
has caused it to be the subject of more than one conquest, leaving some impressive picturesque ruins
that still stand today.
